Wedding in Hernhill

My website: Wedding Photographers in Kent

A selection of images from Rebecca and Dean's wedding, photographed last Saturday at Hernhill and Mount Ephraim Gardens, near Canterbury. Please check out their wedding gallery.

1/500, f/1.4, ISO 400, ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/80, f/1.4, ISO 800, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

My usual adage applies - a low quantity of light but of very good quality.

1/80, f/1.4, ISO 400, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/160, f/1.4, ISO 400, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

I love the sidelighting in this shot.

1/5000, f/1.4, ISO 200, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

The sun was shining fiercely at this point so it was into the protective custody of open shade. Ideally I'd be looking for a slightly darker background but sometimes that option is not available.

HDR (-2, 0, +2), f/4.6, ISO 200, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

An HDR shot to hold detail in the sky.

1/320, f/4, ISO 200, ⅓ EV, 24mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Shot under the protective canopy of a tree. I had the wedding cars just behind me so had to shoot wide. Space is often limited so having a wide angle lens in your bag is essential.

1/1600, f/2.8, ISO 100, ‒ 1 EV, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

I love the expressions on their faces.

1/320, f/4, ISO 400, ²⁄₃ EV, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Positive exposure compensation to take account of the bright background.

1/400, f/3.5, ISO 400, ‒ 1 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

I love the interior at Mount Ephraim but the lighting can be challenging due to the glass roof.

1/320, f/1.6, ISO 100, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

There's nearly always a lighting sweet spot in the vicinity of a doorway.

1/160, f/2, ISO 50, 1 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

Positive EC due to the background.

1/125, f/4, ISO 50, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/1000, f/2.2, ISO 50, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

I used the new perspective correction tool in Lightroom 3 to get the steps perfectly horizontal.

1/1000, f/2.2, ISO 50, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/5000, f/3.2, ISO 50, ‒ 1 ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

I underexposed this shot to produce a silhouette. But I also liked the above treatment where I've added fill light to bring out a bit more detail.

1/250, f/4, ISO 50, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/800, f/7.1, ISO 400, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

The steps at the front of Mount Ephraim are terrific for group shots. You can control people's placement in both the horizontal and vertical axes.

Any comments or queries welcome as ever.

I see you are loving this 35mm 1.4 dave, so how are you finding it now that you have had it for a while, anything to add to your first review on this lens?
Q: If you had to cover a wedding with only one lens which would you pick if i may ask :)
Thanks for the inspiring blog
Best Regards

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the kind feedback.

Yes, I am loving the 35mm f/1.4 lens. So versatile (if only it were a bit cheaper).

If I could take only one lens with me (not a nice thought!) it would have to be this one.

Yours,

David

Yes I am just about to invest in one at 1180 from jessops most retailers are waiting to receive them from canon on backorder, personally I am convinced that canon have a big warehouse somewhere full of them slowly releasing them just in time to keep the price up :)

Hope you keep the blog up..

Regards
Paul
