A St Augustine's Wedding

My website: Wedding Photographers in Kent

A selection of images from Clare and Stewart's wedding yesterday at St Augustine's in Westgate. Please check out their wedding gallery. If you're using a device which is not compatible with Adobe Flash then please check out this gallery instead.

It rained very heavily yesterday afternoon but it was dry for the first 20 minutes, so I grabbed some shots outside. Thought I'd start with a scene-setter, though I had to photoshop out a big blue 'In' sign at the top right.

1/1600, f/2.8, ISO 250, 0 EV, 35mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

I've never seen such a glamorous conductor before.

1/80, f/2.8, ISO 2000, 0 EV, 125mm, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

Once the rain started we set up in the spacious chapel area for some group shots.

And now the light report: quality high, quantity low. Check out that ISO setting.

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

In this sequence I positioned them between windows to give both front and backlighting.

1/100, f/2.5, ISO 1600, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 1600, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/125, f/2.8, ISO 1250, ‒ ⅓ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

1/80, f/2.8, ISO 2000, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/160, f/2.8, ISO 2500, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/200, f/1.6, ISO 1600, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/125, f/2.8, ISO 2000, ⅓ EV, 0 FEC, 35mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

I try and avoid using flash during the ceremony unless absolutely necessary - which it was yesterday. There was hardly any light falling on their faces so I couldn't even use positive exposure compensation. I bounced the flash from the corner of the room, above and behind me on the left.

1/125, f/2.8, ISO 2000, ⅓ EV, 0 FEC, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

1/200, f/1.8, ISO 2000, ‒ ⅓ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

Back to natural light.

1/125, f/2, ISO 2000, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

1/50, f/2.8, ISO 2000, ⅓ EV, 1 FEC, 20mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Bounced off the wall to my left. I zoomed the flash head to 70mm as it was a fair distance away.

1/40, f/2.8, ISO 2000, 0 EV, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Tough conditions for compact cameras.

1/200, f/2.8, ISO 2500, ⅓ EV, 1 FEC, 16mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

1/160, f/2.5, ISO 1250, 0 EV, -2 FEC, 35mm f/1.4L

I placed the flash unit on a small stand about 3m behind the couple with the flash head in the portrait orientation and triggered it with a PocketWizard. I kept the flash in E-TTL mode so that I could tweak the effect without having to move.

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 1250, 0 EV, -1 FEC, 200mm, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

A bit more power from the flash.

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 1250, 0 EV, -1 FEC, 70mm, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS

1/125, f/2, ISO 2000, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

I managed to sniff out a small pocket of soft natural light.

1/125, f/2, ISO 2000, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

1/160, f/2.2, ISO 1600, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

1/40, f/4, ISO 3200, ⅓ EV, 35mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

Doing a group shot of everyone is not always possible indoors. St Augustine's, however, is ideally set up.

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 3200, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 3200, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/100, f/4, ISO 1600, ‒ ²⁄₃ EV, 35mm, 16-35mm f/2.8L II

1/100, f/1.6, ISO 3200, 0 EV, 85mm f/1.2L II

1/125, f/2.2, ISO 2500, ‒ ⅓ EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/400, f/2, ISO 3200, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

1/160, f/2.5, ISO 3200, 0 EV, 35mm f/1.4L

Comments and queries welcome as ever.

Hi mate,

I regularly visit your blog and you always have fantastic pictures. I just had to comment this time because I must say those pictures on the alter on the 70 - 200 really are epic ... they are AWESOME! I wish I'd have thought of that ... great photography.

Cheers

Darren

Hi Darren,

Many thanks for the feedback - really appreciate it.

I can see myself using this technique frequently over the winter period.

I couldn't reliably trigger my flash in the past with the ST-E2 transmitter. The Pocket Wizards, however, have yet to let me down.

All the best,

David
